I am eager to use GE as a database for recording sites for the purposes of my work. Last time I tried this my machine was refreshed (not so for me hah) and the file was lost . How can I best safegaurd this as I should not store them under GE's My Places which is temporary?

Nigel, GE stores your my places in your windows profile.. typically c:\documents and Settings\\application data\Google\googleearth\my places.kml

if your machine is ever refreshed again you may request to have your profile preserved then reapplied on the new operating system.. otherwise simply save the my places folder to a .kmz before the refresh and then after the refresh open it up and drag its contents to your new my places.. hope that makes sense!
