Cadastre WMS layer

Posted by Billee McGinley at February 20. 2007

Hi,

I work in a commercial private company. We have a Google Earth Pro licence. This licence allows us to use imagery visualised in Google Earth Pro in a commercial environment, including in documentation, as long as the Google Earth logo is displayed. I have recently added the NTG cadaste WMS layer. Are we allowed to use this layer in documents we produce for clients?

Regards

Hello again,

I am still waiting for a response to the above question so I would like to take the opportunity to add a few comments.

I feel that it would NOT be inapropriate to use the WMS cadastre layer for commercial uses seeming as though GHD already have access to this layer in ILIS maps, as well as have a licence for the use of the cadastre. I suppose the question extends more to other organisations that do not have agreements to use the cadastre. However, a WMS layer is not as functional as a GIS formatted layer. The NTG cadastre WMS layer is just for viewing, and we can all see it in NT Atlas, which is available to the public. If a GIS person wanted to use it to its full capacity (ie be able to extrat data from it etc) they would still have to aquire a GIS format version of the cadastre data set.

Billee,

Sorry about the delay in responding, as it generated a policy discussion as to the availability and potential uses of this and other types of interfaces by external to Government organisations.

As a result of our discussions, the WMS interface will have the following statement added to the GetCapabilities request that clarifies the permitted uses of this interface.

Data accessed through this WMS service may be used for internal business purposes only, including use as a reference backdrop in hardcopy reports for clients. Any commercial use by way of on-sale in digital or hardcopy form or incorporation into commercial products or web service is prohibited unless authorised by licence. Further information on the use of this service can be obtained be telephoning +61 8 8999 7028 or emailing landinfo.dpi@nt.gov.au.
