what map projection to use for the Daly River?

Posted by paulr at January 02. 2008

Hi there NT folk

I am starting to do some GIS modelling of the Daly River catchment, and need to convert the 9" DEM of the region (in decimal degrees format) to a projected format (units = metres).  Ordinarily I'd use a UTM projection, but the catchment straddles the UTM zone 52/53 boundaries.  Any suggestions as to other projections that may be in use locally that could be appropriate, such as those used by other NT govt mapping agencies.  I'd like to try and be as consistent as possible with existing maps.

Paul, we have communicate this question by email, but in order to benefit people in the forum, post my answer here.

In this case,  I would suggest you to use FME to convert. In “Add
Destination Dataset”,
for “Coordinate System”, you can
choose UTM84 and choose the
Zone Number (52/53) as
the majority  your data
occupies.
