- A seminar by visiting scholar Dr Bruce Doran In 1999 the Australian Productivity Commission released an influential report on Australia’s gambling industry. Amongst other things, the study identified “accessibility” to gambling opportunities as a key factor in contributing to problem gambling. This gave rise to a number of studies that set out to investigate the many social, spatial and temporal dimensions of gambling accessibility. Since 2005, a number of studies have focused on developing spatially-explicit approaches to assist regulatory bodies in formulating appropriate responses to gambling-related issues at different scales. This seminar outlines some of the advances that have been made, as well as some of the future challenges relating to spatial investigations of gambling accessibility in Australia.
