How to use the Data Browser in Bentley Map

by Bernd Ruta last modified Feb 16, 2010 11:46 AM

The data browser in Bentley Map can be used to analyse and edit feature properties in a Microstation v8i workspace.

See the ProjectWise Explorer user manual for help in setting up a project and retrieving data from Oracle.

Use the Interoperability Panel in Bentley Map to select the features required for your project.

Once you have the features required from Oracle (either by view or All) in your DGN drawing you can display all the attributes (properties) of those features via the Data Browser.

Choose the browser using one of the following

-          Command Manager - Data Browser Icon

-          Feature Menu - Data Browser option

-          Interoperability box - right click on the feature type and select preview (no editing allowed with this option)

-          Browse option in Map Manager

The icons at the top of the browser panel allow for a variety of browsing options.

Load View

Choose Load View to get a listing of features and their properties depicted on your graphic screen. All feature types will be listed under separated tabs – select the tab for the features you want to locate/edit/analyse

Set the browser Zoom Preferences to suit the dataset you are working with and the coordinate system. For Lat and Long aerial photo projects try the following

You are now ready to use the Data Browser  to locate features in the drawing file

locate tool

Right click on any record or field to select the Locate options. The above settings should suit most projects.

Before using the browser, set your DGN highlight options to suit your job as the defaults are sometimes not very visible. This can be found in the Settings menu under Design File.

Another useful setting is to enable the ability to select a polygon by pointing to its interior (even when fill is turned off) This can be set in the workspace preferences under Input

The Browser can now be used to locate features within the DGN file. Select any field of any record to highlight it on the graphics screen.

Eg. Selecting Whittaker Street on the browser in this example will highlight that segment of Whittaker Street in the graphic view as shown bellow. The feature will be highlighted with the colour chosen in your design file settings

select street

For more refined searching use the Find  dialogue box  to locate specific features by any field values.

find

Use filters to find groups of features with specific criteria. Right click on the header for each column and use the standard filters and sorting options or create your own custom search profiles.

The following options will be available in the next version of Bentley Map

Correcting a field value in one or more feature records can be done using the data browser Edit Property Value function

Select the field/Fields you wish to change using the left mouse button and combinations of shift or control key to select multiple fields. Right click on any highlighted field then select the edit function,

Use the drop down option to select a domain value

Or edit values using the keyboard

After each edit this icon appears against each record on LHS

When edits are complete save the changes using the save icon at the top of the data browser.

If the changes affect the symbology of the feature result will be reflected in the drawing file.

Posting additions or amendments to Oracle

If the amendments you made using the browser are part of a database update you need to process them using the spatial management tools in Bentley Map and Projectwise.

On the Spatial Floating Tool

            Tools – Geospatial – Spatial

Select the Post Icon (Post Features) 2nd from left.

*Ignore the merge dialogue that appears and verify the number of records or features posted on the very bottom line of your screen.

You can keep posting changes and additions until you wish to commit them to Oracle. After the final post right click on the session address in the Interoperability dialogue box. Select version then right click on your version and select the option to Merge to Parent

Check the bottom information tab to see if the merge was successful.
