Jasper Gorge
Permanent Declaration
Place
Jasper Gorge is well known for its scenic characteristics, such as the red sandstone escarpment formations and permanent waterholes and associated riverine vegetation. The gorge contains a diverse range of site types, such as carved boabs, paintings and engravings located along the length of the gorge.

Sites within the gorge and the gorge itself are associated with key phases in human occupation in the area, including Aboriginal land use, early European exploration and settlement of the region.
Jasper Gorge is of cultural and natural significance to the Northern Territory. The Gorge contains a diverse range of cultural features within a scenic gorge setting including carved boabs, paintings, engravings, stone arrangements, stone artefact scatter and Dreaming sites.

Such features may contribute to our understanding of Aboriginal land use and the nature of Aboriginal and European contact in the region. The presence of stone arrangements interpreted as hawk hunting hides, demonstrates a function and design which is no longer generally practiced.

The gorge has historical significance as the location of many early Aboriginal and European encounters and it is associated with early exploring activities of A C Gregory and his party. The gorge is highly valued by the local Aboriginal community as the location of numerous Dreaming sites including those associated with Walujapi (Black Headed Python) and as the location where the Aboriginal Land Commissioner heard evidence for the Kidman Springs / Jasper Gorge Land Claim.

The gorge is also the prime example of the Jasper Gorge Sandstone, a geological unit characteristic of the Victoria River Region and formed during a major marine transgression phase in which a shallow sea spread over the region.
