John Flynn Memorial Church
Permanent Declaration
Place
The John Flynn Memorial Church was designed by Arthur Philpott. Its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister R.G. Menzies in June 1954 and officially opened on 5 May 1956. On one of the plaques one can read 'For Christ and the Continent. This Church has been erected by the Australian Inland Mission to the Glory of God and in the memory of the Very Rev. John Flynn, D.D., O.B.E., Superintendent A.I.M., 1912-1951; founder Royal Flying Doctor Service; Moderator-General Presbyterian Church, 1939-1942. He spread a mantle of safety over the inland.'
The John Flynn Memorial Church is highly regarded by the community both as a place of worship for the congregation of the Uniting Church in North Australia and as a memorial to an ordained Minister who, during his lifetime, devoted much of his energy towards improving and providing a 'Mantle of Safety' for the people of the outback.

The Church was specifically designed to reflect the life and achievements of John Flynn (1880-1951), a Presbyterian minister, who was founder and Superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission of the Presbyterian Church in Australia. He is acknowledged also as one of the founders of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister on 26 June 1954 and was opened by the Governor-General and dedicated by the Moderator General of the Presbyterian Church in Australia on 5 May 1956.
