Description

The Tank was originally constructed as a water storage facility for the Vestey Meatworks. The Tank has since been converted into an undercover gymnasium and open air auditorium and assembly area at Darwin High School.

Statement Of
Heritage Value

This place is the only substantial structure that remains from the large Vestey's Meatworks complex which reflected a misplaced optimism in the growth of the cattle industry following the Commonwealth take over of the Northern Territory. It marks an early use of reinforced concrete in a massive structure that is unique for its age. The adaptive re-use of the structure as a gymnasium is innovative and creative.
