Ludmilla Saltpan
Permanent Declaration
Place
The Ludmilla saltpan is the remains of an historic salt works that began in 1919 and operated for 20 years. Initially established to supply salt to cure the meat at nearby Vesteys meatworks, it supplied salt for the curing of other products such as buffalo and crocodile hides. It was an early Darwin based endeavour that recalls life and industry before refrigeration.

The salt pan is naturally occurring constituting a clay floored basin that was fed by the tidal movements of Ludmilla Creek. The basin would flood with salt water, the water eventually evaporating leaving the remaining salt to be harvested. Additional infrastructure was minimal. The edges of the basin were built up to deepen it and contain the flood. There was a pump to increase water volume and sluice gates to control the flow between sections of the pan. There was also a hand pushed cart on rails used to haul salt from the pan to the shed where it was bagged.

The physical remains include the pan itself and the remains of the pump system, sluice gate, rail and walls. The saltpan and the remains of the works reflect a modest industry that utilised the natural systems of the local area.
