Butterfly Gorge
Permanent Declaration
Place
Butterfly Gorge is an attractive scenic area in a popular nature park. Just downstream are significant stands of Melaleuca forest and patches of riverine forest. Some species of palm and fern associated with the warm springs are uncommon in the NT.
Butterfly Gorge, located on the Douglas River approximately 17km south east of Tguwaliyn (Douglas) Hot Springs, is significant to the Territory for its natural environment. The gorge's riparian zones are vital elements of the savannah landscape and their contribution to biodiversity, cultural values and the economy is disproportionate to the small area they occupy. The riparian zones are considered important for maintaining savannah and in-stream biodiversity, stream channel morphology and water quality.

The riparian zones, active thermal springs and a sandstone gorge landscape are of significant scientific interest and are relatively uncommon in the Darwin region making the site valuable for research, monitoring and education.
