WWII Gorrie Airfield Precinct
Permanent Declaration
Place
WWII Airfield and remnants of associated infrastructure located 10km north of Larrimah.
Constructed during 1942-43, Gorrie Airfield played a vital role in the defence of northern Australia during the Second World War. It was the largest RAAF maintenance facility in the Northern Territory. Although not an operational base like some other airfields such as Fenton or Strauss, the role of Gorrie as a major support and servicing base, along with storage and signalling facilities was paramount importance in the success of the Allied air operations in the NWA.
No. 14 Aircraft Repair Depot (ARD) was based at Gorrie and provided major servicing and engineering facilities for all types of RAAF aircraft and vehicles. Aircraft repaired and overhauled at Gorrie included Hudson, Beaufort Bombers, Beaufighters, Wirraways, Spitfires, the Vultue Vengenance, Kittyhawks, Tiger Moths, Dakotas, Lockheeds, Lodestars, the Walrus, the B24 Liberator, B25 Mitchell, Venturas, Mosquitos, Boomerangs and civilian passenger aircraft.
The size, state of preservation and diversity of relics now contained within it ensure that its historic significance is complemented by equally high levels of archaeological significance.
