Illamurta Springs Conservation Reserve
Permanent Declaration
Place
The Reserve embraces a diversity of features which combine to establish its heritage significance.
The relationships betweeen Aboriginals, pastoralists, missionaries and the police at the turn of the century contributed to a dramatic, possibly notorious period in the history of Central Australia. With the establishement of the police camp at Illamurta Springs in 1893, a significant start was made to understand the nature and complexity of Aboriginal culture at the same time maintaining a quality of law and order. Relic structures and yards provide valuable information in the understanding of the history of occupation.

The contributions made by Mounted Constable Cowle, who lived as a virtual hermit at the site for over a decade in primitive conditions, to the sciences of Anthropology and Zoology, combined with his skills as a bushman and law enforcement officer, made him an individual well worthy of his recognised place in the history of theTerritory.

Illamurta Spriings is significant in the evolution of the landscape since it lies at the centre of a thrust fault known as the Illamurta Structure, a geological monument embracing an area about 40 kilometres in length and 8 kilometres wide developed form a basement ridge and associated upward piercing (diapriric) movement of Late Proterozoic sediments.

For the evolution of flora it has relatively minor signficance in that it contains examples of a rare species of tropical reed (Phragmites australis) as well as recorded species of the relatively uncommon Acanthaceae (Sarojusticia kempeana) and Juncaceae (Juncus kraussil).
