Henbury Meteorites Conservation Reserve
Permanent Declaration
Place
The craters are situated on the stony foot slopes and plains immediately north of the Bacon Range. Vegetation consists principally of needlebush (Hakea leucoptera) with some southern bluebush (Maireana astrotricha) low - open shrub land with ephemeral - open herb/grassland. Mulga (Acacia aneura) occurs along drainage lines.
The Henbury Meteorite Craters are of considerable scientific significance and as such are valued by the community. The identification of these craters in the early 1930s was an important development in the study of impact structures. Specifically, the recognition that such features resulted from processes originating beyond Earth's atmosphere.
The site displays a range of attributes characteristic of impact structures and meteorite craters in particular. Furthermore, they are unique in an international context as the only known locality on Earth to display ray and ray loop ejecta similar to that found on the Moon. The craters are a tangible reminder that Earth is part of a larger solar system.
