Old MacDonald Downs Homestead
Permanent Declaration
Place
The design of the Homestead is one of classic simplicity with four rooms accessed from a breezeway with verandahs at each end. It is orientated to take advantage of the environmental qualities of the site.
Old MacDonald Downs Homestead is both historically and architecturally significant to the Northern Territory. The Homestead provided the first permanent home for a pioneer family, that of Charles and Cora Chalmers, which opened up a part of Central Australia. It was built in 1933/34 with assistance by Charles' son, Mac, and using Aboriginal labour. Local materials were used including lime kilned on site, timber and stone.

The building has demonstrated its durability through the years of use and subsequent abandonment following the death of Charles Chalmers in 1967.
