World War II (WWII) Coomalie Airstrip
Permanent Declaration
Place
A WWII airfield comprising of a main runway and taxiways, technical sites located on taxiways and adjacent to the northern threshold, aircraft and store inserts, anti-aircraft positions and domestic sites associated with Nos 31 Squadron and 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit.
The World War II Coomalie Airfield precinct and the K5 Anti-Aircraft Battery site, constructed 1942 and located adjacent to the Stuart Highway near Coomalie Creek, approximately 83km south of Darwin, are highly significant to the Territory as relatively intact examples of a wartime airfield and gun battery site developed for use by the RAAF No.31 Squadron Beaufighter strike bombers, the No.1. Photographic Reconnaissance Unit and the 2/1 Regiment's 225th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery. All units played an important role in the Allied Force's campaign to drive back the invading Japanese in the South West Pacific Region. The complex serves as a reminder of the impact and extent of Japanese air raids on north Australia and of air and artillery operations conducted in the region during World War II.
