Title:Interim Marine and Coastal Regionalisation for Australia (Mesoscale), (IMCRA)
Citation Date:2000-01-14
Date Type:publication
Custodian:Environment Australia
Description
This dataset is a subset of the IMCRA dataset held by Environment Australia, which has been clipped to cover the region under the jurisdiction of the Northern Territory, and immediate surrounds.
It is a regionalisation of the Australian coastal waters to the Australian 200 meter isobath derived from biological and physical data, (eg. coastal geomorphology, tidal attributes, oceanography, bathymetry, intertidal invertebrates).
Attributes include: named regions and their location(s) within provinces.
Data were compiled for Version 3.1 from the most up-to-date data available as of 7 March 1997. The meso-scale regionalisation was compiled from information supplied to Environment Australia by the relevant State, Northen Territory and Commonwealth marine research and management agencies.
The outer seaward extent for the meso-scale IMCRA coverage is defined by the 200m isobath except where this boundary extends beyond the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (AEEZ).
Attributes in the coverage include:
VERSION-NO = the version number of the coverage.
CONT_NAME = the name of the IMCRA region.
CONT_NAME-EXT = the name of IMCRA region with it's three letter code.
STATE = State/ Territory in which IMCRA region occurs.
ST_NUM = unique number corresponding to each State/ Territory or an overlap in jurisdictions.
PROVINCE-NAME = broad scale regional provinces
PROVINCE-NUM = unique number for each broad scale province.

Data Quality
Lineage:Two main approaches were used in integrating data existing data received from State and Northern Territory marine conservation agencies.
1. available regionalisation boundaries and descriptions were interpreted/integrated and
transferred onto paper maps, and then these boundaries were digitised; and
2. where local and sub-reginal-scale GIS data sets were available, these data/regions were aggregated to derive coarser meso-scale map unit boundaries using a combination of paper-based maps and GIS.
More details on individual coverages comprising the meso-scale IMCRA (3.1) are available at the ERIN WWW site at: http://www.environment.gov.au/net/imcra.html, in Appendix 2 of the IMCRA Technical Group (1997) report.
Positional Accuracy:Variable: data compiled at scales varying between 1:100,000 and 1:2,500,000, giving a locational accuracy varying between 100-2,500 m
Attribute Accuracy:No particular tests conducted by EA. Attributes are assumed to be correct as received from State and Northern Territory contributors.
Logical Consistency:Variable. Inshore Estuarine coverage received from the Northern Territory provided marginal marine/estuarine data which is discontinued into the Western Australian and Queensland regions.
Completeness:Complete as at 7 March 1997 (version 3.1) for all of Australia. Inshore esturaine areas only covered for the Northern Territory in this version.
