Description

Abstract:

Australia's 250K map series in digital (raster) format supplied on CD-ROM. Each map has been scanned with all surrounding information including legend, scale bar, etc. Although the data is not georeferenced the perimeter of each map contains both AMG and geographic coordinates. The pixel size is 170 micorons,
equivalent to 150 dots per inch (DPI). Colour is 8 bit or 256 colours. Some older maps have urban, road, rail and drainage information updated onto the images.

Access Constraint:The data are supplied under a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence for non-commercial applications within the organisation purchasing the data. The data, or any
product derived from the data, either digital or hard copy, must not be sold, given away, traded, let, hired or other wise dealt with. Licence fees are applicable. Commercial use of the data requires a special licence from AUSLIG.

Data Quality

Lineage:The RASTER-250K data is derived from a colour scanning of the 1:250 000 scale paper map series. Major urban areas, drainage features and roads have been updated as follows:- Urban areas: new urban areas have been updated manually on the paper maps prior to scanning. The colour has been selected to closely match existing urban areas while remaining distinguishable from them. All major urban areas have been updated with information not more than 2 years old. Drainage: new lakes and dams have been added manually in the same manner as urban areas. Larger lakes have been enhance by manually editing the final images. Roads: Updated roads have been extracted from AUSLIG's TOPO250K vector data, or digitised from Australian Automoble Association plots, and "burnt into the images. The colour and line style of the added roads closely matches the appearance of the roads on the image however are distinguishable on close inspection. No attempt has been made to delete old or disused roads from the images.

Positional Accuracy:Generally all maps have been produced with the expectation that "not more than 10% of well defined points are in error by more than 0.5mm measured on the
source material". This equates to 125 meters on the ground. The mean residuals from geocoding to 8 control points are less than one pixel (170 microns or approx. 45 metres map scale) and average of all map mean residuals is approximately 0.5 pixels.

Attribute Accuracy:Raster data does not have feature attributes. For information about the description of features shown on the maps refer to the maps reliability statement on each image. The legends show the variety of features on each map.

Logical Consistency:20% of maps have been calibrated to 8 control points around the perimeter of the map. The maximum mean residual never exceeded 1 pixel (0.17mm or 42 metres). All maps images have been inspected for completeness and lack of visible distortion.

Completeness:Australia
