This summary index contains a single boundary polygon for each survey, grouped into a compilation spatial dataset that covers the Northern Territory. This compilation dataset is regularly updated when new land resource surveys are completed or existing surveys are amended.

Each record contains descriptive details about the survey including; name, scale, date, weblinks to metadata and report (if available). Refer to the Data Dictionary for further descriptions.

The land resource surveys are categorised into 4 groups - 1. LAND UNIT SURVEYS, 2. LAND SYSTEM SURVEYS, 3. SOIL SURVEYS and 4. OTHER LAND SURVEYS.

1. General Description of Land Unit Surveys: Land unit mapping target smaller areas intensely, providing detail across a survey area. These surveys originally targeted the agricultural areas of the Greater Darwin Area, Top End Coastal Plains and Daly Basin but now there is an increased emphasis on catchment management for a wide range of clients. Definition of a Land unit: a reasonably homogenous part of a land surface, distinct from surrounding terrain with consistent properties in landform, soil and vegetation (Laity 1971). Survey scales range from 1:10,000 to 1:100,000.

2. General Description of Land System Surveys: Land system surveys are broad or reconnaissance surveys. Although they cover extensive areas they do not provide the detail required for activities such as property management on small farms. They provide an initial understanding of large tracts of land often recommending further detailed work take place in particular areas. Definition of a Land system: an area or group of areas throughout which there is a recurring pattern of topography, vegetation and soils, (Christian and Stewart 1953) Survey scales range from 1:100,000 to 1:1,000,000.

3. General Description of Soil Surveys: They generally contain minimal other information such as vegetation information but quite often will contain at least some landform information. In the past they have generally been undertaken for agricultural developments sometimes using a grid survey approach for intense surveys in order to map soil variability. In some cases they are undertaken due to the native vegetation being previously cleared or removed. Survey scales range from 1:5,000 to 1:1,000,000.

4. General Description of Other Land Resource Surveys: These include a variety of other surveys not by definition referred to as a land unit, land system or soil survey. They generally target specific land resource issues such as landform type surveys, land suitability or agricultural capability surveys. They generally target specific needs such as agricultural suitability or capability, suitability for urban and peri-urban development, drainage mapping or a combination of these. In some instances they are undertaken to assist the estimates of such as carrying capacity on pastoral land. Survey scales range from 1:3,000 to 1:100,000.

5. Range Land Systems of Alice Springs region, for 43 properties, were mapped between 1976 and 1991 for a Range Condition Assessment Program. In 2020, a project was initiated to create consistent descriptive attributes for the spatial datasets and also update the mapping products. Survey scales are approximate and range between 1:100,00 and 1:250000.
