Citation Date:2025-03-31

Date Type:creation

Description

Abstract:

This spatial dataset delineates land system boundaries of NTP 3910 in the Deep Well area at a scale of 1: 100,000. Dominant landform, soils and vegetation are described for each Land System, and general land capability is assessed. The study area covers approximately 2220 ha approximately 60 km south-east of Alice Springs.
The objectives of the investigation were to a. undertake a reconnaissance investigation to determine the general land capability of the area to support horticultural development, b. map and describe land resources within the study area. and c. generate land capability ratings for each land system facet based on assessment of soil and landscape attributes against an explicit set of criteria.

Data Quality

Lineage:Preliminary map unit boundaries delineated from interpretation of digital satellite imagery including ESRI Worl Imagery, Google Satellite Imagery, Sentinel-2 imagery, 1:250,000 scale geological maps (Northern Territory Geological Survey) and 1 second Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) Digital Elevation Models Version 1.0.
Field data described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Final map unit boundaries adjusted to account for field data. Core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.

Positional Accuracy:Polygon data - map unit boundaries delineated on screen using geographical information system software. Positional accuracy generally considered to be high. The NT Visualiser Aerial Photography Mosaic acheives roughly 7.2m accuracy. (Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing Vol. 72, No. 3, March 2006, pp. 249 - 260).
Esri World Imagery provides one meter or better satellite and aerial imagery in many parts of the world and lower resolution satellite imagery worldwide. The positional accuracy in the Deep Well area is likely at the lower end of this.

Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture. Attributes are assigned according to the dominant facet within each Land System. The department's list of core attribute values, described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.
The dominant facet of each land system has been assessed for GENERAL LAND CAPABILITY, evaluating landscape characteristics that could influence the general use of the land. A General Land Capability Class of 1: Land with negligible constraints, to Class 4: Land with Extreme Constraints, has been assigned to each land facet. The capability of the dominant land facet is assigned to each land system.
Information about the General Land Capability of individual land facets within each Land System is available in the accompanying report. (See Supplementary Information in this metadata record for report PDF download details)

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are - must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:COMPLETE
