The primary purpose of this investigation was to identify areas of land with the potential for development and their inherent constraints within the survey area.
The spatial dataset is an updated version of the original Land Resources of the Eastern Portion of Owen Springs Station (2002), with original land unit boundaries refined and the addition of three new land units. Vegetation descriptions have been updated to the current National Vegetation Information System (NVIS). The northern section of the spatial dataset up to -24.05 degrees has been mapped at 1:25,000 scale with the section further south mapped at 1:50,000.
Core landform, soil, vegetation, and land capability attributes attached to the land units are included with the spatial dataset.</gco:CharacterString></gmd:abstract><gmd:resourceMaintenance><gmd:MD_MaintenanceInformation><gmd:maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency><gmd:MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/resources/codeList?MD_MaintenanceFrequencyCode" codeListValue="notPlanned"/></gmd:maintenanceAndUpdateFrequency></gmd:MD_MaintenanceInformation></gmd:resourceMaintenance><gmd:resourceConstraints><gmd:MD_LegalConstraints><gmd:useLimitation><gco:CharacterString>Download the spatial data package (contains ESRI spatial data) via https://data.nt.gov.au/

Survey methodologies and related technical assessments used during the investigation are listed in the accompanying technical report:
Mapped land units typically exhibit a uniform pattern on aerial photography or satellite imagery, and present as a repeatable and recognisable combination of landscape terrain, soil type and associated vegetation community. While some degree of variation is normally expected within a land unit, such variation is usually too small or too inconsistent to map separately at the given survey scale. Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. The department's list of core attribute values, described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.
Each land unit has also been assessed for GENERAL LAND CAPABILITY, evaluating landscape characteristics that could influence the general use of the land. General Land Capability is assessed using four classes (Class 1 to 4). A General Land Capability Class of 1 Land with negligible constraints to Class 4 Land with Extreme Constraints has been assigned to each land unit. Descriptions for ten key characteristics considered important have been added to the land unit polygon, including acid sulphate soil potential, flooding, microrelief, salinity, slope (as a surrogate for water erosion), sodicity, soil depth, soil drainage, surface rock and wind erosion.
