Published maps were digitsed and edited to accommodate overlaps, gaps and mismatching boundaries. Where possible, these land system descriptions have been extrapolated into areas where previously covered by the broader scale (1:1,000,000) land systems. Additionally 'interim' land system designation have been assigned to areas where little or no field data is currently available. These may be validated when field information is available. This spatial dataset is also further described with Vegetation attributes based on individual survey reports. They were compiled, collated and consolidated across all survey areas to develop a consistent set of vegetation attributes across the greater survey area. Land system mapping is largely a descriptive approach to displaying and documenting information on landscapes. While the conversion of this information into a qualitative database format allows for more immediate and versatile analyses, caution must be adopted where necessary, as this has exceeded the intent of the original work. Mapping boundaries have been scanned and digitised from paper maps. When overlain on a satellite image, the intention of the mapped boundaries is apparent, although the positional accuracy is still dependent on original map product.0not knownMany of the original Land System maps were only attributed with a mapunit (generally an abbreviation of the land system name from the accompanying report). The attribution of the spatial dataset continues to be a time intensive process involving repetitive perusal of published reports. A number of general purpose fields have been added to the dataset to add to its versatility and purpose, as well as keep account of its derivation and various modifications to it. Some of these are incomplete or still in progress. SOIL and VEGETATION attributed tables have been joined via relationship classes to an ESRI File Geodatabase format. Descriptive information about these tables is available via this department. Species nomenclature for vegetation mapunit descriptions reflects the original taxonomic nomenclature detailed in the relevant Land Resource report. Consequently, these may not reflect the currently accepted species nomenclature for the Northern Territory and caution should be exercised in the application of this information where taxonomic accuracy is a consideration. Current nomenclature should be verified with the relevant institutions (e.g. the Northern Territory or Australian National Herbaria).0Land system surveys (1:250,000) have been undertaken in the NT since 1961. These surveys involved mapping boundaries on aerial photographs, collection and collation of extensive field information and ultimately the production of a report and series of maps. In some cases these surveys were very specific to their particular project area and no correlation was made with previous or adjoining work. In amalgamating these surveys modifications to some of the original interpretations has been necessary. There are currently 351 land systems that describe the northern part of the Northern Territory. 257 of these have been taken from published reports, the other 94 have been drafted from other sources and in many cases are interim designations. Data was compiled from the following existing land resource surveys: - General Report on Lands of the Tipperary Area, 1961. - Lands of the Adelaide-Alligator Area, 1969. - Lands of the Ord-Victoria Area, Western Australia and Northern Territory, 1970. - Land System Survey of Eva Valley Station and Surrounding Vacant Crown Land, 1973 - Lands of the Alligator Rivers Area, 1976 - Land Systems of the Port Keats Area, 1972 - Land Systems of the Dry River Area, 1978 - Land Systems of the Western Half of Melville Island, 1978 - National Park Value of Gimbat and Goodparla Pasture Leases, 1979 - Land Systems of the Upper McArthur River Catchment, 1981 - Land Resources of Katherine Gorge National Park, 1984 - Land Systems of Finniss River Station, 1984 - Land Systems of the Darwin Region, 1985 - Land Resources of the Sturt Plateau, 1985 - Land Resources of Cobourg Peninsula, 1986 - Land Systems of the Southern Gulf Region, 1990 - Land Systems of the Roper River Catchment, 1992 - Land Systems of Arnhem Land, 1998
