Title: Land unit compilations at various scales
Citation Date:2010-01-01
Date Type:publication
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
These groups of polygon spatial datasets are compilations of existing land unit datasets where department has described the land units information using a standard set of core attributes that describe the dominant landform, soils and vegetation. The datasets have been merged together by like scale for presentation in NR Maps. The group scales are 25k, 50k and 100k and extend across the entire Northern Territory.
Each data compilation is displayed twice in NR Maps however the descriptive attributes are identical. Eg Landunit 25k displays just the outline of each polygon. Landunit 25k Landform displays the polygons grouped by dominant landform.
See NR Maps. http://nrmaps.nt.gov.au/nrmaps.html
- Layer: eg. Landunit 25k - To find the source for each dataset, refer to the attribute field Survey ID.
- Layer: Land Resource Surveys Finer Scale - Each polygon represents the survey extents and contains details describing the survey and also includes links to the report, individual metadata record, download spatial data package and maps if available.
- Layer: SALI soil profile descriptions (SALI - soil and land information) Each point describes soil profile and landform descriptions.

Data Quality
Lineage:Each completed land resource survey is stored as an individual dataset in an Oracle database using the survey identifier. (eg AUV15)199) The surveys are merged only for data display in NR Maps. The merged display is not stored as a data compilation. An associated survey extent for each dataset contains details describing the survey and also includes web links to the report, individual metadata record, download spatial data package and maps if available.
Refer to each survey metadata record to find lineage details for the map unit boundaries.
1998 to 2013 - Map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs. Aerial photography scanned and rectified. Linework digitised on screen directly from original aerial photographs.
2014 to current date - Map unit boundaries delineated from digital satellite imagery (WorldView-2) and digital elevation model (SRTM-derived 1 second Smoothed DEM). Preliminary linework was captured on field map sheets. Field map sheets incorporated digital satellite imagery and DEM layers. Field map sheets with final linework were scanned and rectified. Linework digitised on screen directly from field map sheets.
Positional Accuracy:Each survey was mapped at a specific scale. Enlarging the data beyond the scale will not provide further detail. A site inspection should always accompany mapping for specific areas.
Site point coordinates derived from a geographic positioning system with general accuracy of within 10-50m.
1998 to 2013 - Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified aerial photographs. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.
2014 to current - Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified field maps. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual map sheets. Control points exclusively used Map Grid of Australia (MGA) grid lines. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.
Attribute Accuracy:Each polygon contains a value for each of the attributes described in the Data Dictionary in this metadata record.
Logical Consistency:Caution: This merged dataset may contain overlapping polygons.
Each dataset is completed using GIS editing tools rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
Completeness:This dataset is updated for display in NR Maps as required.

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description 01. SURVEY_NME Alias: Survey Name
The name of the survey area or report to which the mapping refers.02. SURVEY_ID Alias: Survey Identifier
- A department code used for storage purposes that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site field sheet.
- Overlay layer from folder: the Land Resource Survey Index; Land Resource Surveys Finer Scale. Make this the Active Layer.
- Review the survey details over your area of interest. Download associated reports, maps or spatial data as required.03. LANDUNIT Alias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie 9a2).04. LF_CLASS Alias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).05. SOIL_SYS Alias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description06. SOIL Alias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.07. VEG_SYS Alias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.08. VEG_STRUC Alias: Dominant Veg Structure
Vegetation structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes09. SPECIES_1 Alias: Veg Dom Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.10. SPECIES_2 Alias: Veg Dom Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.11. SPECIES_3 Alias: Veg Dom Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.12. LF_DESC Alias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.13. SOIL_DESC Alias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.14. VEG_DESC Alias: Vegetation Description
The dominant species and its structure are recorded. Occasionally it will include `minor' vegetation communities also noted in the land unit description and/or notes specific to the community.
