Description

Abstract:

The Aircraft Noise Exposure Forecast system is a scientific measure of noise exposure levels from aircrafts, which affect airports and their surrounding areas. The data is represented as contours (ANEF units) representing the difference between areas of high exposure ( larger ANEF unit) to those of lower exposure (smaller ANEF unit). ANEF is produced and managed by the Commonwealth Department of Defence

Supplementary Information

The Aircraft Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) was developed in the United States of America in the late 1960s and adopted in Australia in 1982.

The ANEF system is a scientific measure of noise exposure levels from aircrafts across a physical area. The forecast is for the ensuring ten years and are based on future operations at Airports. Various factors are considered, including aircraft movement frequency and their allocation to flight paths, noise signatures and the performance characteristics of aircrafts.

The ANEF maps are plans of the airfield and surrounds on which noise exposure contours have been drawn. The contours are represented and labelled as 20,25,35 and 40 ANEF units, which define areas around the airfield which are affected by the ANEF. The higher the ANEF contour value, the greater the exposure in the underlying area.

The Department of Defence is responsible for the production of ANEF, due mainly to the unique nature of aircraft operations in terms of aircraft type and their functions. The Department of Defence also prepares ANEF maps in accordance to the Australian Standard 2021 - 2000 "Acoustics Aircraft Noise Intrusion - Building Siting and Construction"
