Sampling was carried out on a systematic grid of east-west transects and consisted of a combination of aerial identification and ground surveyed sites. The surveyed data provides a more complete assessment of wetlands of high conservation value to help identify appropriate management options and priorities. Approximately 26 families and 504 taxa occur within the wetland systems, although not all species are endemic to these habitats. The reports summarise the physical descriptions of the floodplains from the ANCA Wetland Directory. At each site, a photograph was taken from the air (500m altitude with 35mm focal length lens) and a note was taken of all dominant/characterisitc species and communities at the site. - The resulting photographs thus covered an area measuring aproximately 400 x 400 metres (16 ha). - At about a third of the survey sites, the helicopter was landed and a census of plant species and environmental variables was made.0not knownPlants were categories into 3 broad floristic groups; Saline/semi-saline; Dry freshwater; Wet freshwater. 38 communities were established which included grasslands, sedgelands, paperbark forests and woodlands, as well as open water and mangrove communities. Community 0 means the original floodplain vegetation type has been replaced by mimosa, para grass or killed by salt water intrusion at time of survey (1991).0Fieldwork commenced after floodwaters had peaked (late March 1991) and was finished before floodwaters had dried in late May 1990. All floodplains were systematically sampled on east - west transects. Survey sites were located at 2.5 km intervals along transects spaced 2.5 km apart. A total of 323 species from 847 quadrats were recorded in the survey.
