It is a compilation of 8 existing land resource surveys and also includes an additional small area mapped in 2012. The Mary River Catchment covers an area of 8034 km2 and is located approximately 100km east of Darwin on the western side of Kakadu National Park. The catchment area extends from the Van Dieman Gulf coastline in the north and south to Pine Creek township. The spatial dataset includes the department core attribute descriptions for dominant soils, landform class, broad vegetation structure and species. No accompanying report has been produced for the compiled spatial dataset. Refer to the Supplementary information in this metadata record to view report details for each of the original land resource surveys. All spatial datasets have been appended into a single dataset and clipped to the boundary of the Mary River Catchment. No accompanying report has been produced for this compilation dataset. The original surveys are listed under the heading Supplementary Information and include weblinks to the associated reports and metadata records. Original descriptions can be sourced using the survey code and land unit codes as these provide a link to the original report land unit descriptions. Mapping was extended to include a small area of the catchment where no published spatial data currently existed. Line work captured in association with the Upper Mary River project (Napier and Steen, 2002) (UMARY_50) was used to extend information into this unmapped area. Adjacent survey map units were used to label polygons in this area. Core attributes describing the land units were added to this compilation spatial dataset in September 2013. 0Version 1. 2015 The datasets appended range in scale from 1:25,000 to 1:50,000 originally captured as non-spatial and spatial data from 1971 - 2013. Compilation of the dataset in 2013 involved appending spatial datasets in ArcInfo using ortho-rectified aerial photography, topographic data and soil-landscape and vegetation site information. Version 2. 2021 Land unit labels were updated to resolve issues where the same land unit was present in multiple surveys. By default, land unit labels will refer to the Upper Mary River Catchment survey report. However, if the survey source is different, the land unit label will include a short version of the survey code. For example 2a:A.
