Title: Katherine River Flood Study 2017
Citation Date:2017-11-09
Date Type:creation
Custodian:Department of Lands, Planning and Environment
Description
WRM Water & Environment (WRM) was engaged by the Northern Territory Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL) to update the flood study for the township of Katherine and the surrounds. The previous flood study was undertaken in 2000 (Water Studies, 2000a). This study has been prompted by advances in modelling technologies and the availability of recent topographic data.

Data Quality
Lineage:The flood data was created by routing the 1 percent AEP and PMF design event discharges through a TUFLOW hydraulic model which uses a DEM, hydraulic structure data and design event discharges to determine the spatial extent of inundation, including flood levels, flood depths, water velocity and Depth x Velocity. Two hydraulic modelling were developed for the study area. A large scale (25 m grid) model covering the entire study area of 790 km2 (the regional model) from Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) to the north to the confluence of King River and Katherine River to the south. A finer scale model (10 m grid) covering the Katherine town area (the Katherine Town area model) from the intersection of Chambers Drive and Gorge Road to the north, to Murnburlu Road to the south.
The raster outputs have also been vectorised and classified into the following flood classes for each flood level:
Depth from 0.0 to 0.5 metres
Depth from 0.5 to 1.2 metres
Depth from 1.2 to 2.0 metres
Depth greater than 2.0 metres
Depth x velocity (DV) greater than 1m2/s
Spatial data produced as part of the study was grouped into a geodatabase, which contains tables, rasters and feature class for this project. Vectors and rasters were stored directly in the geodatabase. The geodatabase represents a relationship between datasets to ensure spatial information, collected or produced as part of the study is recorded in a consistent format. This relationship between datasets is defined as a data model and it consists of inter-related tables, raster and vector products grouped by a study.
Positional Accuracy:10 metres grid was adopted for the Katherine Town Area to ensure a reasonable representation of the major drainage features.
25 metres grid was adopted for the Katherine Regional Area to ensure a reasonable representation of the major drainage features.
Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the Flood Spatial Data Specification Version 2 at time of capture. The template ensures consistent information is recorded and displayed on any platform.
Logical Consistency:Data of similar type have the same attribute structure.
Completeness:Complete
