Description

Abstract:

Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images from the public domain have been geolocated for integration with NTGS geoscientific data.
No processing of these images has been done at NTGS .
An index has been generated to show the combined spatial coverage of the landsat datasets, data of capture of individual scenes and availability.

Data Quality

Lineage:Landsat TM, or 'thematic mapper' data was collected in six or seven bands by a series of satellite-borne instruments in the 80s and 90s, now replaced by the Aster instruments on board the Terra satellites.

Images with red, green and blue assigned to bands 7, 4 and 1 are commonly used in mineral exploration as satisfactorily expressing the mineral variation in the surface. Images using bands 742 are more commonly used for land use, as they express the vegetation more than 741.

PC1, or the first principal component, tends to express the bright-and-dark caused by sun shading. Consequently, PC2 tends to represent the next strongest remaining variation across the image. As the surface of the Northern Territory is mainly naked soil, so PC2 is expected to express net mineral variation. Ratios of bands 5 on 4 and 1 on 7 express variation between minerals. See elsewhere for information on "band ratios".

Positional Accuracy:Landsat data is collected by scanner in swaths which are geolocated by comparison with ground features. Location accuracy is only trusted to 100 m or so in NTGS work. See elsewhere for more authoritative estimates of positional accuracy.

Attribute Accuracy:Landsat bands are separated out by diffraction gratings, which pass the various bands in Gaussian distributions such that most bands overlap somewhat. The wavelengths quoted in Landsat metadata allude to the centre of the band.
