Data Quality

Lineage:Sample and assay data are captured from both open file company exploration reports and NTGS projects. Exploration data is extracted from legacy hardcopy reports by scanning and digitising, including spatial data captured from maps where necessary. Legacy data capture has been completed at various times and usually on a geological terrain basis. More recent exploration reports and data are supplied in digital formats and have been uploaded directly into the database after transcription to a standard loading template. Data is transferred to the database using the load templates e.g. soil, rockchip, wholerock, stream sediments and drillhole collars. Data is validated twice, at the template stage (before entry) and during loading into the database. Data is extracted using ETL tools and loaded into STRIKE as well as file-based outputs in Mapinfo table and ESRI shapefile formats, included in the NT Wide Downloads page.

From late 2014, a major data cleansing and validation project was carried out. Duplicate records and those records missing certain mandatory attributes were removed. Some missing attribute data was added after checking against the original reports. Other attribute data was standardised.

Positional Accuracy:Approximately 20-150m metres using 100K topographical maps (AGD66) or GPS. Sites recorded using MGA94 (Map Grid of Australia). Decimal latitudes and longitudes are available for each site.

Attribute Accuracy:Analysis is performed by laboratories to set standards. Geological observations and descriptive attributes noted by Geological Survey geologists.

Logical Consistency:All data is associated with four to six key fields common to each data template. Data maintains a logical grouping within these templates; key information, geological, analysis details etc.

Completeness:Data is as complete as possible for each record. Data cannot be entered without all the mandatory fields completed. Data is not entered into the database without location data, either MGAs or geographical coordinates. All sample types are available in Northern Territory Geochemistry Datasets, Digital Information Package 001 (DIP001). However, drill samples are not available on STRIKE (NTGS web mapping data delivery and viewing application http://strike.nt.gov.au. Due to the flat file nature of the STRIKE layers and those included in DIP001 the laboratory method information is not included for each assay and the original source will need be checked.
