Description

Abstract:

This is a compilation of several polygon spatial datasets and provides broad information on the vegetation map unit boundaries of Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, Northern Territory. The survey area, of 2029 km2, is located approximately 570 km, by road, north east of Darwin on the Cobourg Peninsula. The data is relevant for use at a mapping scale of 1:100,000.

In 2010, mangrove mapping was incorporated into the generalised vegetation polygons. The data represents a brief synopsis only and is not designed as an exhaustive treatise on the vegetation of Cobourg Peninsula. The vegetation descriptions and mapped polygons were obtained from the analysis of field plot data, various published reports and vegetation surveys, including;
- Mangroves, coastline and saline flats (De vries et al 2001)
- Monsoon forests and spring forests (Russell-Smith et al 1991)
- Land resource mapping (Wood et al 1986)

Data Quality

Lineage:(pre 1995) Original map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs and stereoscope interpretation. Map units transferred to topographic map sheets via a mapograph. Original maps were hardcopy only, however, with the advent of geographic information systems, polygons were later digitised by rectifying the original hard copy maps.
(post 1995) Map unit boundaries derived using aerial photography and digital satellite imagery, geological and topographic data.
(Mud Crab habitat and mangroves 2002) Landsat ETM+ imagery was processed using the standard technique of Danaher (1995a) to produce a digital dataset of the tidal coastal wetland habitats. The computer-based coastal wetland community classification was validated with fieldwork conducted in 2001.
(2010) Mangrove polygon mapping was incorporated into the generalised vegetation polygons using ESRI ArcGIS desktop software. Polygon areas calculated using Albers (area preserving in metres) projection: Central meridian 133.5, Standard Parallels -12.666 and -23.3333.

Positional Accuracy:Polygon data: Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features.
(pre 1998) Positional accuracy generally considered moderate to high. Map unit boundaries transferred from aerial photographs to topographic maps via a mapograph.
(post 1998) Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high. Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified aerial photographs.

Attribute Accuracy:Field data (site information) describing vegetation community type, composition and distribution collected and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
