Data Quality

Lineage:Data was collated from various sources including petroleum operations records, NTGS records and databases, BMR (Bureau of Mineral Resources) publications, Geoscience Australia datasets and company information. The collated data were first published in MapInfo, ArcGIS and MS excel format in July 2010. Offshore wells, administered by NOPTA, were removed in 2012. Additional onshore wells and amendments to existing details are added routinely.

Positional Accuracy:Approximately +/- 20 metres for surveyed well locations. Location source varies from "original databases" to final well completion reports submitted by operators. Data entry and conversion from projected to geographic is manual. Datum has been assumed based on date if not given in original source.

Attribute Accuracy:Attribute source varies from "original database" to final well completion reports. The depths and elevations of some older wells have been converted from feet to meters.

Logical Consistency:The attributes and locations are manually entered and corrected if and when typing errors or more detailed information is found.

Completeness:Wells are added after the final well completion report has been submitted. Proposed and in-progress well details are not published in this dataset. Government (BMR and NTGS) stratigraphic wells are not included unless they were drilled as part of an industry government collaboration.

BasinThe geological basin, sub-basin or province assigned to a well in the final Well Completion Report
Bottom hole Lithology/Formation Bottom hole lithology (BHL) or Bottom hole formation (BHF) - the lithology type or formation penetrated at total measured depth. Released when basic data is open filed.
