Description

Abstract:

This polygon spatial dataset provides information on vegetation communities over the southern part of Flying Fox Station, Northern Territory. This dataset is mapped at a nominal scale of 1:100,000 and covers an area of approximately 53,000 ha.

The polygon boundaries are derived from remotely sensed imagery with pixel resolution of approximately 10 m. The boundaries were created using an automated segmentation process that groups like-pixels into polygon segments. These segments were subsequently classified into vegetation community groups.

The information includes dominant strata, structural formation and floristic details, as well as a brief general description of the characteristic landscapes. The information is intended to support land management, conservation, and development planning processes at Flying Fox Station and surrounding areas.

CAUTION: Although based on detailed field information, the final dataset has not been validated. Users are advised that attribute accuracy varies over the study area.

Data Quality

Lineage:Vegetation map unit boundaries were derived from Landsat digital satellite imagery (February 2018), Sentinel 2 digital satellite imagery (September 2016) and derived vegetation indice models, radiometric data sourced from Geoscience Australia (2015), a digital elevation model (SRTM-derived 1 second Smoothed DEM) and derived slope and terrain classification index models, all with a pixel resolution of approximately 10 m.

Segmentation and analyses were performed in eCognition and ArcGIS to visually capture landscape features at a scale of 1:100,000. Segments were classified into vegetation map units by training a random tree classifier algorithm with typical remotely sensed signals for surveyed field sites and observations.

Descriptions of vegetation map units were based on survey data from fieldwork conducted between September 2016 and October 2017. The classification system uses the Australian Vegetation Attribute Manual: National Vegetation Information System, Version 7.0 (NVIS Technical Working Group 2017).

Positional Accuracy:Vegetation map unit boundaries were derived from an automated segmentation process of raster data at a pixel resolution of approximately 10 m. Positional accuracy is thus generally considered to be high. However positional accuracy is considerably lower where vegetation map unit boundaries are diffused (i.e. between vegetation community groups with similar structure which display similar remote sensing signals).

The final dataset is stored in the department's spatial library with geographic datum GDA94.

Attribute Accuracy:Attributes were assigned according to the dominant features of the vegetation map unit, as determined from field investigations. Attribute accuracy is considered to be high.
CAUTION: Although based on detailed field information, the final dataset has not been validated. Users are advised that attribute accuracy varies over the study area.
Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been joined to polygons based on their Vegetation Community Group classification.

Logical Consistency:Polygons are naturally joined without overlap or gaps because they were derived from a single surface. GIS editing tools were used to merge neighbouring regions. The final dataset is single part polygons with no overlaps or gaps. Each polygon is described.
