Abstract:

Department Survey Code (Land Units): KRP18_25

This spatial dataset provides polygon information delineating land unit boundaries at a scale of 1: 25,000. The investigation has assessed land based constraints and determined land capability outcomes for potential future agricultural development. The study area, Section 2, covers 168 km2 and is located in the north-west Ord-Victoria River region of the Northern Territory within the Spirit Hills pastoral lease.

The investigation has reinterpreted legacy soil data from Land Units of the Keep Plains, NT. (Aldrick and Moody 1977) with field work compiling limited vegetation and surface landscape information. A modification to the original land unit 1 split into 3 sub-units: 1-south, 1-central, and 1-north.

The original survey describes the land resource information over the Lower Keep area. Use the field LAND_UNIT in both surveys to join the datasets.

CAUTION: Field assessments conform to national standards and support mapping at a scale of 1:25 000. When assessing specific areas within the mapping it is recommended a site inspection is undertaken to establish unmapped variation and confirm mapping accuracy on the ground.

Data Quality

Lineage:The investigation has reinterpreted legacy soil data only. Pre-existing mapping in the Lower Keep was re-examined with the aid of additional landscape observations, high-resolution digital aerial photography (2012), high resolution aerial imagery, DEM, geological and topographic data. As a consequence, the outcomes are of lower confidence and convey less certainty with regard to land capability outcomes.

Attribute Accuracy:KRP18_25 survey contains attributes relating to the land capability assessment. To review land resource details, refer to survey KPLAIN_25. Join the data using the land unit attribute.

The attribute information conforms to the Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook at time of capture. Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen.
The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format

Each land unit has also been assessed for GENERAL LAND CAPABILITY, evaluating landscape characteristics that could influence the general use of the land. Descriptions for key characteristics considered important have been added to the land unit polygon, including slope, surface rock, soil depth, soil drainage, flooding, salinity and acid sulfate soils.
