Description

Abstract:

This polygon spatial dataset provides information on the land unit boundaries of Mount Ringwood Station, Northern Territory and describes dominant landform, soils and vegetation. The survey area of 160 km2 is located on the western part of Mount Ringwood Station, approximately 100 km east of the Adelaide River township. The survey area, between Howley Creek and Margaret River, was selected for evaluation of current and future development.

The original field survey was undertaken in 1978 at a mapping scale of 1:25,000.
Core attributes describing the land units, as defined by this department, were added to the spatial dataset in October 2020.

Data Quality

Lineage:Original map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs and stereoscope interpretation. Map units transferred to topographic map sheets via a mapograph. Original maps were hardcopy only. With the advent of geographic information systems polygons were digitised by rectifying the original hard copy maps.

Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ESRI ArcGIS). Core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.

Positional Accuracy:Polygon data - Hardcopy maps rectified using control points marked on original hardcopy maps. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points) positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered moderate.

Point data - Survey teams navigated during field operations with topographic maps, aerial photographs and prismatic compass. Point source locations marked on aerial photography in the field. Positional accuracy considered within 300m but generally below 200m depending on the terrain. Site coordinates derived by transferring site locations from aerial photographs to topographic maps and coordinates calculated. In some cases sites have been georeferenced directly from aerial photography to Google Earth Web Map Server in MapInfo or ArcGIS.

Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture.
Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. The department has assigned a list of core attribute values, described in the Data Dictionary below, to each polygon.

The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
01. SURVEY_NMEAlias: Survey Name
The name of the survey area or report to which the mapping refers
02. SURVEY_IDAlias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
03. LANDUNITAlias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie 9a2).
04. LF_CLASSAlias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).
05. SOIL_SYSAlias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description
06. SOILAlias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
07. VEG_SYSAlias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.
08. VEG_STRUCAlias: Dominant Veg Structure
Vegetation structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes
09. SPECIES_1Alias: Veg Dom Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
10. SPECIES_2Alias: Veg Dom Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
11. SPECIES_3Alias: Veg Dom Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance
12. LF_DESCAlias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.
13. SOIL_DESCAlias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
14. VEG_DESCAlias: Vegetation Description
The dominant species and its structure are recorded. Occasionally it will include minor vegetation communities also noted in the land unit description and/or notes specific to the community.
