Description

Abstract:

This polygon spatial dataset describes the Risk to Biodiversity in the Wadeye Area, located approximately 250 km south-east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. The biodiversity assessment area covers 17,800 ha.

Flora surveys were undertaken between September and November 2018 to assess the distribution and abundance of significant flora and vertebrate fauna species. Sensitive and significant vegetation communities were also identified and mapped.

This information is part of the Mapping the Future Project of the Wadeye Area. This project has identified land capability, water availability and biodiversity values to support land planning and inform development potential over the Wadeye area. Reports and maps for the Wadeye project can be viewed from the webpage: https://depws.nt.gov.au/DevelopmentOpportunities

Data Quality

Lineage:The biodiversity values in this Risk to Biodiversity spatial dataset were compiled by the Flora and Fauna Division of this department from several sources;
- Wadeye Vegetation Community Mapping, scale 10k (Flora and Fauna Division, 2021)
- Grevillea myosodes - High density occurrence (Flora and Fauna Division, 2021)
- Grevillea myosodes - Land units 8a1, 8c2, scale 25k (NANGU_25, Rangelands Division, 2017)
- Grevillea myosodes - Land units 8a1, 8c2, scale 25k (NANGU_25 extension, Flora and Fauna Division, 2021)
- Land units with lower biodiversity value, scale 25k (NANGU_25, Rangelands Division, 2017)

Existing systematic land resource mapping (NANGU_25) was used to identify the land units in which the Near Threatened Grevillea myosodes occurrs; and as the basis of an assessment of the potential habitat for target species within the study area. Because the biodiversity study area covered an expanded footprint in comparison to the existing land resource mapping, additional mapping (NANGU_25 extension) was undertaken in conjunction with DEPWS Land Resource Assessment Branch using a similar approach. These areas were defined using the vegetation components for land units 8a1 and 8c. This allowed areas of potential habitat for the target species to be identified across the entire biodiversity study area. Bounding polygons were created to define areas with statistically significant clusters of records for the Near Threatened Grevillea myosodes.

The spatial data was compiled into the dataset, Wadeye Risk to Biodiversity. The final dataset and the original datasets are stored in an ESRI file geodatabase and available to access in a spatial data package. (see Access Constraint in this metadata record). The data source is noted in the spatial data in the attribute field: SOURCE.

Positional Accuracy:Various spatial datasets and scales were used to compile the final risk class. Refer to original datasets.

Attribute Accuracy:Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture. Attribute values are assigned to each polygon and described in the Data Dictionary below. The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

Biodiversity values data are compiled into five possible Risk to Biodiversity classes (refer to Data Dictionary in this record). This survey defined 3 classes as follows;
Class 2. No significant value
Class 4. Sensitive and/or significant biodiversity
Class 5. High biodiversity value

Integer from 1 to 5.

Datasets from a range of sources were joined to create a Risk to Biodiversity Class ranked from 1 to 5, ranging from Nil Biodiversity Risk to High Biodiversity Risk.
The Risk to Biodiversity Class contains 3 parts referring to Description 1, 2 and 3. They are joined together for mapping display.
1(1) NIL (2) Highly modified (3) Land that has had significant alteration by land use, development, mining or infrastructure.
2(1) LOW (2) No significant biodiversity value (3) No significant values identified.
3(1) MITIGABLE (2) Apply land management strategies (3) Land that may provide habitat for broadly-occurring threatened species or other biodiversity values. Retention of a proportion of this habitat, for example through application of the NT Land Clearing Guidelines, may be required to protect biodiversity values.
4(1) MODERATE (2) Sensitive and/or significant biodiversity (3) Land containing sensitive or significant vegetation types as identified in the NT Land Clearing Guidelines, and/or occurrence of species of conservation interest.
5(1) HIGH (2) High biodiversity value (3) Land with high biodiversity value based on significant vegetation community type, and/or habitat for threatened species.
