Title: Northern Territory Crocodile Capture Zones
Citation Date:2021-07-07
Date Type:publication
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
The location of where crocodiles are captured in the Northern Territory are defined by broad geographic areas referred to as Crocodile Capture Zones. The coordinate location of traps is not provided to the public.
Details about daily capture records are sourced from the Croc Capture Database and stored in a separate table. The table is available for public access but does not include coordinate locations. (see Access Constraint below)
The count is also summarised as a yearly cumulative value for each zone and displayed for public view on NR Maps.
The zones may be viewed using NR Maps. See folder: Parks and Culture > Wildlife. https://nrmaps.nt.gov.au/nrmaps.html
The cumulative total for each zone is updated on a nightly basis. Add the zones together for a yearly Northern Territory total.

Data Quality
Lineage:The spatial polygons were developed by NTG staff supporting the crocodile management program using GIS software (ESRI ArcGIS shapefiles). Data sources for coastlines and islands were the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 3 Topographic Data from Geoscience Australia. Zones were generally developed as follows;
- Borroloola: 100 km buffer from Borroloola township
- Katherine Zone 1: 5 km buffer from the Katherine River
- Litchfield: an extraction from reserves in GEODATA.
- Management Zone: originated in 2009 with minor modifications over the years.
- Nhulunbuy: 50 km buffer from Nhulunbuy township.
- Shoal Bay, Upper Harbour, Lower Harbour: straight line boundaries were hand-drawn
The spatial polygons are provided in an ESRI shapefile format in Geographics with datum GDA94. The capture table is provided in a Microsoft Office Excel format.
Positional Accuracy: - The zone boundaries are generally created using boundaries from data scale 1:250,000.
- Daily capture records include a coordinate location however this is not provided for public access.
Attribute Accuracy: - The capture zones are named and have a currency date.
- The daily capture records contain details including; capture date and method, crocodile size and general location details. The coordinate location for each capture is not available for public access.
- The zone totals in the capture table are sourced from the Crocodile Capture Database. Zero (or null) values may reflect incorrect details in the database.
Logical Consistency:The polygons are multi-part.
Completeness:The spatial boundaries are complete. If amended, the information will be noted in the Lineage section of this metadata record.
An associated table, NT Crocodile Captures.xlsx is updated nightly.
