Title: Land Resources of the Mary River Catchment
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
This polygon spatial dataset describes the Land Resources of the Mary River Catchment. It is a compilation of 8 existing land resource surveys and also includes an additional small area mapped in 2012. The Mary River Catchment covers an area of 8034 km2 and is located approximately 100km east of Darwin on the western side of Kakadu National Park. The catchment area extends from the Van Dieman Gulf coastline in the north and south to Pine Creek township.
The spatial dataset includes the department core attribute descriptions for dominant soils, landform class, broad vegetation structure and species.
No accompanying report has been produced for the compiled spatial dataset. Refer to the Supplementary information in this metadata record to view report details for each of the original land resource surveys.
All spatial datasets have been appended into a single dataset and clipped to the boundary of the Mary River Catchment. No accompanying report has been produced for this compilation dataset. The original surveys are listed under the heading Supplementary Information and include weblinks to the associated reports and metadata records.

2015 The datasets appended range in scale from 1:25,000 to 1:50,000 originally captured as non-spatial and spatial data from 1971 - 2013. Compilation of the dataset in 2013 involved appending spatial datasets in ArcInfo using ortho-rectified aerial photography, topographic data and soil-landscape and vegetation site information.
2021 Land unit labels were updated to resolve issues where the same land unit was present in multiple surveys. By default, land unit labels will refer to the Upper Mary River Catchment survey report. However, if the survey source is different, the land unit label will include a short version of the survey code. For example 2a:A. (A = Land Resources of Annaburroo Station) A list of the survey codes and reports are described in the Data Dictionary in this metadata record.
Positional Accuracy:Due to scale differences some polygons on the boundaries between surveys were unable to be edge matched. The MRC_50 dataset is a desktop compilation and considered Version 1. The information is considered applicable at a scale of 1:50,000.
Attribute Accuracy:Information from the original 8 reports has been used to attribute the new dataset.
Original departmental survey codes from the 8 surveys are an attribute of the spatial data. Original descriptions can be sourced using the survey code and land unit codes as these provide a link to the original report land unit descriptions. Mapping was extended to include a small area of the catchment where no published spatial data currently existed. Line work captured in association with the Upper Mary River project (Napier and Steen, 2002) (UMARY_50) was used to extend information into this unmapped area. Adjacent survey map units were used to label polygons in this area.
Core attributes describing the land units were added to this compilation spatial dataset in September 2013.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description 01. SURVEY_NME Alias: Survey Name
The full name of the report to which the mapping refers
02. SURVEY_ID Alias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
03. LAND_UNIT Alias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie.2a).
By default, land unit labels will refer to the Upper Mary River Catchment survey report.
However, if the survey source is different, the land unit label will include a short version of the survey code.
For example 2a:A (A = Land Resources of Annaburroo Station)

LF_CLASS Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998). 05. SOIL_SYS Alias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description
06. SOIL Alias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
07. VEG_SYS Alias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.
08. VEG_STRUC Alias: Dominant Veg Structure
Vegetation structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes
09. SPECIES_1 Alias: Veg Dom Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
10. SPECIES_2 Alias: Veg Dom Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
11. SPECIES_ 3 Alias: Veg Dom Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance
12. LF_DESC Alias: Landform Description
Landform related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys.
13. SOIL_DESC Alias: Soil Description
Soil related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys
14. VEG_DESC Alias: Vegetation Description
The VEG_DESC is the vegetation related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys.
15. DOUBLE_LAB Alias: Land Unit Other Component
used where a land unit label shares 2 descriptions.
For example; 3a1/3c1 It may be unknown which is the dominant unit. The description for the first unit 3a1 is noted in the attribute table.
