Description

Abstract:

The dataset is a Northern Territory wide compilation of springs, recorded at various times and by various workers. Springs are places where groundwater discharges to the surface. They are mostly natural but several man-made features are also included here. They are classified into nine types related mainly to their geometry. A selection of key attributes of the springs is also contained in the dataset.

Data Quality

Lineage:The data was compiled from numerous existing sources including the Hydstra database and several regional water assessment projects. These are noted in the Reference field. The main characteristic that warranted inclusion of a feature into the dataset was that it was described as a spring.

Positional Accuracy:The dataset is a collection of point features that represent the point at which water emerges from the ground (the source of the spring). It should be noted that some springs have considerable areal extent and could be represented as polygonal features. In such cases the spring is represented here as a point, sometimes at a place where a water sample was taken or where the outflow was measured or where it is accessible. Many springs have been viewed on Google Earth and the locations adjusted in cases where the source of the spring is obvious.
There is also an overlap between springs that can be represented as points and places where groundwater discharges into a stretch of a stream bed. The latter type of spring is only represented here if the stretch if the stream is relatively small, say less than a few hundred metres. Longer discharge features are included in the End of Dry Season Flows dataset which is made up of linear features.
The actual positional accuracy of features is highly variable due to the range of time over which the data was acquired and methods by which they were captured. Sites with HYDSTRA station numbers will generally have some indication of positional accuracy.

Attribute Accuracy:Most attributes have been taken directly from the original source of data and the accuracy is unknown. Several fields including AQUIFER, AQ_TYPE, FLOW_TYPE and PHOTOS have been added later to enhance the data. AQUIFER was interpreted from hydrogeological or geological maps, AQ_TYPE from hydrogeological maps and FLOW_TYPE was interpreted from inspection of stream flow records. The Photos field was compiled by cross checking with the Water Resources photo database.

Logical Consistency:Point topology rules applied are point must be disjointed (points separated spatially from other points in the same feature class) and must be properly inside (points fall within area features).

Completeness:Complete
