| History/Origin | According to F Clune in "Overland Telegraph" Birdum Creek was named by RC Patterson during the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line in 1872 after his wife. Birdum being the pet name for his wife. Birdum Creek appears on Ringwood's Plan of the OT Line (1872) and SW Herbert mentions "Birdum Creek" in his manuscript "Reminiscences of Life in the NT (1870-1873)" when he journeyed along the OT Line from Port Darwin. It would appear that AC Gregory may have journeyed along the Birdum Creek, where it joins Elsey Creek, but he makes no mention of the name, nor does John Ross when he journeyed along the proposed route of the OT Line prior to its construction, although Clune in Overland Telegraph mentions that Ross and party discovered the stream whilst attempting to locate Strangways River. Todd makes mention of the stream in his report to the SA Parliament (SAPP 29 of 1873). |
