History/Origin Harts Range appears on Ringwood's 1873 map (sheet 4) of the Overland Telegraph Line. It is believed to have been named by John Ross in 1870 whilst exploring for a route for the Telegraph Line.

Harts Range is belived to be named after the Hon John Hart CMG, who was a member of the South Australian Parliament between 1857 and 1873, during which time he was a Minister of the Crown nine times and Premier three time.
