Reportedly named during World War II for Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve Sub-Lieutenant, Gordon Louis Higginson (born 16 March 1915), who commanded the HMAS Maroubra from September 1942 to April 1943 and later conducted a running survey from the larger HMAS Southern Cross until September 1943.
