| History/Origin | Kekwick Ponds was named by John McD Stuart on 19 June 1860. Stuart named it after William Darton Kekwick his second in command on his expeditions from 1860 to 1863 " in token of the zeal and activity he has displayed during the Expedition". (South Aust. Parl. Paper 65 of 1861, pg 16, pp B) Also see Threadgill: South Aust. Land Exploration, pg 49 footnote 27. Kekwick later joined W.C. Gosse's expedition - he died at Blinman in October 1872. East of Short Range, termination of Bishop Creek. Note that Kekwick Springs, north of Katherine is a seperate feature named by Stuart on his final and successful expedition in 1862. |
