History/Origin | The name Larrimah is believed to originate from the Yangman Aboriginal people. In the Yangman language, Larrimah translates to 'meeting place', reflecting the area's role as a gathering spot for various groups over time. Before European settlement, the Yangman people inhabited the region for over 40,000 years. They associate the landscape of Larrimah with the Dreaming tracks of the Storm Bird, also known as the channel-billed cuckoo, which they believe helped shape the land. The town of Larrimah itself was officially established in 1940 as the southern terminus of the North Australia Railway. During World War II, it became a significant military hub, serving as a staging point for troops and supplies. The nearby Gorrie Airfield, constructed during the war, further solidified Larrimah's strategic importance. Today, Larrimah remains a small community. Sources: Tourism Top End. (n.d.).
