History/Origin The gorge takes its name from Trephina Creek which flows through it.

Trephina Creek is believed to be named after Tryphina Benstead (nee Rains), the wife of William (Bill) Benstead who was the manager of Undoolya Station from 1877. In the early 1880s Tryphina (from Adelaide) and Bill married, and Bill returned to the centre. Bill Benstead brought his wife, infant son and sister-in-law to Barrow Creek in the mid 1880s.

Although the first record of the name is Treffena Ck on a 1938 plan (OP1106 "Plan of Portion of PL115"), the creek was probably named around 1880 by William Benstead who was Manager of the nearby Undoolya Station.
