History/Origin Named after the Yarrawonga Park Zoo which used to be on the site where McKenzie Place now is. The late Dr Alex McKenzie and Mrs Jean McKenzie came to Darwin in the post-war years and settled at Pee Wee Camp at East Point. Later they established themselves on freehold land where in 1965 they set up a wildlife park which they called Yarrawonga Park.

It is believed that the name "Yarrawonga" came from Victoria, the aboriginal word origin being "the place where the wonga pigeon nests".
