The name Sanderson derives from the former Hundred of Sanderson, proclaimed in 1879, and was retained when the area was formally designated the Town of Sanderson in 1972. The name commemorates Frederick James Sanderson (c1834-1903), a senior public servant whose career spanned several decades within South Australia's colonial administration.
