| History/Origin | This population centre and old drovers town takes its name from the adjacent water body named by John McDouall Stuart in 1861 after the Duke of Newcastle, Henry Pelham. McDouall Stuart's original handwritten journal shows that he actually named the water body, Glandfield Lagoon after the then Major of Adelaide, but the SA Government decided to apply the name, Newcastle Waters, after the Secretary for Colonies. After the Pastoral Station was established here about 1885 and later operated by the Lewis family etc, the Federal Government constructed a Police Station and other facilities before WW2 at the junction of the Stock Routes. Finally, a town area (on the "Ridge") was surveyed and gazetted (CG 2, 9 January 1964; NTG 3, 22/1/64) containing 23.59 hectares. It lies 285 kilometres north north west of Tennant Creek. |
