| History/Origin | Named in commemoration of Nancy Browne (nee Moo) and Albert Vincent (Bill) Browne. Nancy was a daughter of Larrakia-Wulna elder Topsy Garamanak and a Chinese man Frank Moo. Nancy was taken away from her mother as a young girl and sent to work as a domestic servant for the Yates family. During her time with the Yates family Nancy was evacuated to Sydney as a result of the Japanese air raids on Darwin. Nancy would later tell of the day she and others waved at the first Japanese bombers as they passed overhead, thinking the planes were American. Albert Vincent (Bill) Browne (1924-2003) in July 1946, as a 22 year old, arrived in Darwin from Adelaide, following his discharge from the Army where he served in the 2/48 Australian Infantry Battalion. Bill met, courted and married Nancy Moo in 1948. Bill and Nancy raised 15 children in a house on Railway Hill. Nancy passed away in 1982, and Bill in 2003. The Browne family is one of the eight major family groups of the Larrakia. |
