History/Origin The suburb of Braitling is named after William (Bill) Walter Braitling (1887-1959) and Doreen Rose Braitling née Crook (1904-1979), who established Mount Doreen Station in 1932. Located about 380 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs along the Tanami Road, the station was part of the growing cattle industry in the Northern Territory.

Bill Braitling was an experienced drover who, with Doreen, took on the considerable challenge of managing a remote cattle property in a demanding environment. In 1956, Bill was among the first in Central Australia to invest in a road train, marking a shift towards more efficient cattle transportation in the region. His career also included a notable legal incident in 1945 when he was charged with assault; he was acquitted the following year.

After Bill's death in 1959, Doreen moved to Alice Springs, where she became involved in heritage preservation. She helped establish the National Trust of the Northern Territory and served as its first president. Doreen also shared her knowledge of Central Australia through radio talks and written works, contributing significantly to the documentation of the region's history. In 1979, she was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to the Northern Territory community but passed away before the award was presented.
