| History/Origin | The suburb of Katherine East takes its name from the town of Katherine, which itself was named after the nearby Katherine River. The river was named by explorer John McDouall Stuart during his fourth and successful crossing of Australia from south to north in 1862. Stuart named the river after Catherine Chambers, the second daughter of his principal patron, James Chambers. During this expedition, Stuart crossed the river approximately 30 miles east of the present town site. Katherine East emerged as a designation used by local residents to describe the newer residential subdivisions located to the east of the original town centre. The name was later adopted officially as the suburb name. |
