| History/Origin | The suburb of Katherine South takes its name from its location relative to the town of Katherine. The name was commonly used by local residents to describe the residential area situated south of the Stuart Highway. The town of Katherine itself was named after the nearby Katherine River, which was named by explorer John McDouall Stuart during his fourth and successful crossing of Australia from south to north in 1862. Stuart named the river after Catherine Chambers, the second daughter of his principal patron, James Chambers. During this expedition, Stuart crossed the river approximately 30 miles east of the present town site. |
